Crises? What Crises!
Saturday 10th October, round 1 of the Top Teams Cup for the Suettes and City of Glasgow Ragazzi. Both teams playing against City of Edinburgh, and both of the Ragazzi sides losing. . . .tough day!
In the men`s side that`s a 0 : 3 record for the season so far. Three games played and lost. . . crises? The match against City of Edinburgh was at their Fortress Queensferry and it was an outstanding encounter, demonstrating the very best of Scottish men`s Volleyball. We took a two sets to zero lead, although the second set had been fiercely fought all the way to the 30-28 win. They won set three as we took our foot off the gas, and they pressed an advantage through some stunning first tempo play. Set four we rallied and had chances to win. Set five they turned with an 8-6 lead and never looked back. It was fantastic volleyball played in the best of spirits. It was competitive, it was absorbing, it was enormously exciting, and we are 0 : 3 for the season so far. . . .crises?
We were missing players through injury and illness, it would have helped to have had the steadying influence of out regular Libero, but make no mistake we played a great game of volleyball and lost to a team who were also playing a great game of volleyball. . . .crises?
The Suettes took a three sets to nil pounding from a rampant City of Edinburgh, with Mel Coutts being the star of the show. Two weeks ago the result was the reverse, but Mel did not play in that game, and we did not find the determination we had shown then. . . .crises?
Division I play should be about elite involvement, commitment and aggression, ball control linked to competition, and tough tough serves. . . they matched this recipe, we struggled to find determination and surrendered the match 0 : 3. . . .what crises?
Winning and losing are two sides of the same coin, the key factor over a season is playing well and demonstrating the qualities demanded of elite performers. . . so the question is what is Monday`s practice going to look like? Full of intensity and effort? Full of the desire to reverse these early season hic-cups? Full of the knowledge that the only way to change things (results) is to work through this patch of time and target excellence? Crises. . . .what crises?
