McGrenary starts 1st game for Ragazzi in 5 years
Saturday 27th November was a day that Stewart McGrenary was not sure if he would ever see. Stewart had several seasons playing professional in Denmark and Germany followed by being part of the initial GB programme. A serious knee injury robbed Stewart of a chance to join the GB team in Holland and he spent a year in rehab however further complications meant it was unlikely he would play at that level again.
Stewart headed back to Glasgow and looked to regain fitness with a view to playing for Su Ragazzi again; however before he could play a game he snapped his achilles tendon in pre-season and he spent another 2 years away from the club.
This summer Stewart took his next tentative steps back and whilst struggling with mobility he was clearly determined to push his body one last time.
‘This is definitely my last attempt; so far it’s been okay I still have pain in my knees and ankle but a really good warm up helps. My targets are to obtain a starting slot for Su then ultimately push my way back into Scotland contention. Saturday was a great day for me just to be on court I can still hit the ball hard but my jump and mobility are still only at 65% of what I would like. I make Bobby Jackson look like a gymnast at the moment’
Stewart is involved in coaching the Scotland junior team and is looking forward to seeing the youngsters perform at the Kelvin Hall on the 18th and 19th December.
