Another day of mixed fortunes

Saturday 24th October saw the second of this season`s home matches. The Su Ragazzi players were present, the various oppositions were present, the pictures and sound systems were there, and Kevin`s Cafe was in full swing. . . but there was something missing.

Sandra Grubb attended the day in her official capacity, and interviewed a host of people for her `Meet me at the Net` project. She was supported by Jim Berryman, who thought the match they were watching was great! That was the City of Glasgow Ragazzi who played Kilmarnock`s first team. It was great game. Kilmarnock are in a rebuilding phase and are working really hard with some young players. The City team are trying to find some consistency, and the performance in this match helped. The first set was pretty straightforward with the Su team always being in front. The second set was also pretty straightforward with the Killie boys always being in front. Sets three and four were competitive, with the home side winning both, a 3 to 1 scoreline was probably reflective of the performances, but the visitors played well and will get better as the season unfolds.

The other two matches saw the home side stuttering to a 2 to 3 loss (the Suettes) and the Su Ragazzi men II be in ravaged by a very dominant Kilmarnock II. Jets II who played our girls were loud, were noisy, were full of enthusiasm, and never gave up. At 2 sets each and 14, 12 for the home side we should have seen the game off, but a combination of preventable circumstances saw the Jets side battle through to a great win for them.

The men II were stretched through illness and injury to key players, but did not play well. There`s something missing this season which was present in our play last year; something about fighting spirit, or belief, or something. The Kilmarnock team are leading the league and playing well; but the second 5 sets to zero hammering in a row is not good news for the home side.

Home Saturday 2 was an occasion; Laura`s announcing was good, several of the players in the men`s top team were great; Jonny Herley as the game`s MVP had an excellent day; Ali King had his best performance of the season, and there`s a chance to build some momentum on the back of the performance and the win. . . but there`s something missing this season which the Club needs to find soon.
