Sometimes the weekend is anything but a break!

The Schelde Sports National League season is one week away, and the weekend of the 12th and 13th of September was the last chance to prepare for the Big Start. Actually it was almost the first chance to prepare competitively - the clubs physical and technical sessions have gone well – really well, but trying to find other teams to play preseason matches or sets with has proven to be problematic. This is something which Scottish Volleyball Clubs need to address, if we are to continue to improve the performance standard, however this past weekend was finally a busy one;

Bobby Jackson and Mike McConville were at Coltness at 09.30 and did not leave until after 18.00 - now that is dedication to the club cause - there were a series of events to be managed;

  1. BulletThe Su Ragazzi II men s team had a mini tournament,

  2. BulletThe Suettes had a mini tournament

  3. BulletAnd there was a course to help improve the ability of those responsible for completing the match score sheet.

The event with the men II was supported by City of Edinburgh and Bellshill Cardinals - great thanks are due to these clubs for their help. The play was good, was intense, was competitive, was enjoyable, and was good preparation for all of the teams. The young team from Edinburgh well excellent, and ably supported by Ian Brownlee. They did not win matches, but they impressed with their efforts, and abilities. Bellshill asked some serious questions of the Ragazzi passing unit, and emerged a s winners from the overall event - but a good day.

The Suettes played Jets and NLVC. The Suettes were short of key players, and all of the teams were short of match practice (we really do need to do something about this Scottish Volleyball!). The atmosphere in the gym was one of shared intent, shared purpose, and shared pleasure for being back in the competitive node. The Suettes won both matches, but will have to do more next week when the competition is in earnest. Meanwhile the City of Glasgow Ragazzi boys were in South Queensferry for the Dynamo Cup. The event was organised by the City of Edinburgh Club and featured five evenly balanced teams. The City boys have been electric in practice, but have not faced competition who slowed then down. . . they did in the Dynamo Cup.

Well done Edinburgh Volleyball Club for an excellent event. It is just a shame there had not been enough preparation for it (have I said that already?) We played the host team in match one and lost tamely! We player Kilmarnock in match two and started like a very old car with four flat tires. We improved (slightly) and managed to scrape a 2 sets to 1 victory. Sunday morning we played the Dutch guests Utrech and we won comfortably while looking like a sleek racing car. In the final match we played Leeds Met, competed well and played well to win the first set; competed and played badly in the second set, and lost; and went back to winning ways in the third. We finished the event with three wins (same as Edinburgh and event winners leeds), and somehow were placed third in the leader board – oh well. The erraticness of the performances indicate that we are not yet stable – probably because we have not had enough preseason competition. . .but I guess I have already said this.

So, all in all it has been a busy weekend for Su Ragazzi Volleyball Club. Many thanks to the friends who helped, both individuals and Clubs and many congratulations to the players who did well.

Next week sees the start of the NL season – we are off to face the Mets. That should be interesting!
